Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger says Will Howard may not get a shot to prove anything in 2025

We have already talked about the raw deal rookie quarterback Will Howard is getting with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers selected the former Ohio State star in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft after a stellar 2024 season. But once the team eventually signed veteran Aaron Rodgers, Howard found himself on the outside looking in behind Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger discussed the situation Howard is in on his Footbahlin’ podcast and echoed our sentiments regarding Howard.

“Will’s road is going to be tough here in Pittsburgh, I believe,” Roethlisberger said. “Unless he gets a chance to get out there and plays well right from the get-go. He’s not going to be allowed to have hiccups.”

Roethlisberger also noted that if it were up to him, he’d give the preseason to Howard and Rudolph and let them split reps in a battle for the backup spot. The rub with this is Rodgers, being new to the team needs live reps with his offense to get on the same page before the start of the season. Knowing how head coach Mike Tomlin operates, he’s not going to give Howard any additional opportunities despite him being the biggest unknown on the roster.
