What’s in a name?

As the Washington Commanders continue their search for their next home, a popular football analyst offered a unique solution today: Naming the new stadium after the President of the United States.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, President Donald Trump made his feelings known regarding the franchise’s recent name change.

“You want me to make a controversial statement? I would, ” Trump said to Sarah Fortinsky of TheHill.com. “I wouldn’t have changed the name. It just doesn’t have the same, it doesn’t have the same ring to me. But, you know, winning can make everything sound good,” Trump said. “So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn’t have changed the name.”

President Trump offered a similar view in April when asked if the Commanders should change their name back to a word that is a slur, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. But, as the franchise’s stadium deal continues to face significant hurdles with the Washington, D.C. city council, the President suddenly takes on a more central role. This is because Washington, D.C. itself is subject to the oversight of the federal government.

As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com notes in his piece, a possible concession is restoring the franchise’s previous name. Or, perhaps, naming the new stadium after the President.
