Mets-Athletics Trade Report Surfaces on $67 Million Pitcher originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Despite losing Sunday’s series finale against the New York Yankees, it seems that the New York Mets are beginning to turn things around. They won each of their last four games before Sunday’s loss and are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Furthermore, they are 1.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East lead.
Though the Mets are appearing to have found their groove again, they still have to maximize their roster and not be complacent, which could include them being busy ahead of this month’s trade deadline.
Recently, a major trade update surfaced regarding the Mets and Athletics that will be worth monitoring the rest of the way.
As New York looks to keep their momentum going, they could be active in the trade market. One name to keep an eye on is pitcher Luis Severino. Severino spent the 2024 season with the Mets before joining the Athletics last offseason. However, a reunion could be on the table, even if it is “unlikely” (h/t Andy Martino of SNY).
A reunion between the Mets and Luis Severino has to be considered unlikely — but we wouldn’t call it impossible,” Martino wrote. “Severino left the Mets because the Mets — even though they liked the player and person — didn’t consider the three-year, $67 million contract he signed with the Athletics to be a reasonable deal for him…
“But Severino has publicly complained about that ballpark, leading to an industry belief that the A’s would eat money to trade him. If the team absorbs enough of the contract, or takes on a bad contract in return, he could appeal to the Mets. Again, New York liked Severino and would gladly have retained him at a lower price point.”
So far in his first season with the Athletics, the 31-year-old has a 2-10 record and has recorded a 5.30 ERA with a 1.390 WHIP. Severino currently leads the NL in losses, hits allowed, earned runs allowed, and batters faced. Additionally, he leads the entire MLB in starts with 19.
With the trade deadline just a few weeks away, the Mets are a team to keep an eye on since they could be in line for a reunion with a familiar face as they look to remain strong the rest of the way.
