Lakers could be an option for Bradley Beal if he gets bought out

Two years ago, the Phoenix Suns traded for Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, and in doing so, they thought they had put together a championship team.

But in two full seasons together, Durant and Beal didn’t win a playoff series. In fact, they didn’t even win a single playoff game, and they failed to reach the play-in tournament this past season.

The Suns have cut their losses by trading Durant to the Houston Rockets. They’re now widely expected to try to negotiate a buyout on Beal’s contract, one that will pay him $53.7 million this coming season.

If he does get bought out and becomes a free agent, the Los Angeles Lakers could be on Beal’s list of teams he would like to join.

Via The Athletic:

“According to a league source, the list of teams Beal has thought about includes the LA Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks,” wrote Fred Katz.

Beal, who recently turned 32 years of age, averaged 17.0 points a game this past season, which is considerably lower than his career average of 21.5 points a game. While he isn’t the type of two-way player the Lakers badly need at the guard and wing spots, there is an argument to be made that he could perhaps help significantly off the bench as an instant scorer and secondary facilitator.

They were second-to-last in bench scoring this past season with just 26.2 points per game coming from their reserves. It was one reason they got pounded in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.

Los Angeles has little money to spend right now after signing Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia and Jaxson Hayes in free agency. If it waives guard Shake Milton soon enough, it could sign Beal (or someone else) using part of its bi-annual exception.
