The Brooklyn Nets have made some interesting moves over the course of the 2025 NBA offseason, including trading for Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. and a first-round pick. While Brooklyn has already been involved in a trade where Kevin Durant changed teams, the Nets will be getting a lot less than they did when they traded him to the Phoenix Suns.
ESPN’s Shams Charania announced on Sunday that the expanded trade sending Durant from the Suns to the Houston Rockets is now official, meaning that he is officially a member of the Rockets. Most, if not all, of the trades that are reported once free-agency begins usually goes through, but the league does have a moratorium that last until July 6 just in case something last-minute makes a deal fall through.
However, it should be noted that while the Durant has been expanded to an NBA-record seven teams, it was only with the intention of making the ramifications of the trade easier for each team to navigate through. With so players and/or assets changing sides, it could be difficult for a team’s accounting and salary cap department to keep up with how a trade of this magnitude affects their team.
For the Nets, they will be getting two second-round picks for trading the No. 36 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to the Phoenix Suns and that move will be included in the expanded Durant trade. Per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, and later confirmed by the Nets, Brooklyn will be getting second-round picks in 2026 and 2030 from the Suns for the 36th overall pick that later became Arkansas forward Adou Thiero.
The 2026 second-round pick is the least favorable of the Los Angeles Clippers or most favorable of the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat) while the 2030 second-round is coming from the Celtics. After the deal, the Nets now have 18 second-round picks between 2026 and 2032, plenty of second-round capital to use in the future.
