PLATTSBURGH — High winds cut anglers’ adventures short during the 2025 Toyota Series, a Major League Fishing circuit, held at Lake Champlain from Thursday through Saturday.
Day 3 of the competition, presented by Phoenix Boats northern division and hosted by the city of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, was canceled due to south winds over 20 miles per hour in parts of the lake.
According to the Toyota Series press release, the top seven pros placed on Day 2 were separated by under a pound.
Top 10 pros were:
1. Tucker Smith
2. Ethan Fields
3. Emil Wagner
4. Brody Campbell
5. Dylan Quilatan
6. Kurt Mitchell
7. Kyle Patrick
8. Riley Harris
9. Ethan Carr
10. Tripp Berlinsky
For Spencer Cookson, an angler from Sheffield, Massachusetts, picking the right location is crucial for a good day on the water.
“You can go where you want, so if an angler thinks an area will have a lot of fish, they can go there,” he said. “But you might spend an hour cruising, not catching anything, and you have to make it here in time to weigh in.”
Cookson has participated in 14 MLF events and placed in the top 10 three times.
Cookson said his sight fish “saved him.”
“I think the fish in the area are between spawning, so I think that had an effect on how anglers did out there,” he said. “If this were two weeks from now, we’d all be getting more bites.”
Kirk Sullivan, an angler from Ontario, Canada, did not let the wind stop him.
“(I) caught a lot of fish today, it’s been a good day,” he said on his way back to the live-well. “(It’s) very windy out there though.”
Sullivan has participated in 28 MLF events.
Tucker Smith, an angler from Birmingham, Alabama, secured his first career win and a prize of $40,000.
The win also qualifies Smith for the Toyota Series Championship at Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma, in November.
“It was awesome,” Smith said in a press release. “It is really special to win on a place like this. I’ve never been here before, and I love smallmouth. I really wanted to fish today, but, you know, it was definitely not the conditions to fish. But I had a blast being here, and I’m thankful for the win. This is definitely a good step for the next tournaments this year, and hopefully it gets me back in the groove.”
