Roman Anthony Sends Strong Message to Red Sox About His Future originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
After calling up top prospect Roman Anthony, questions began to emerge as to if the Boston Red Sox would follow the trend of locking up their young star to a long-term deal. It paid off for the Braves when they inked eventual MVP winner Ronald Acuna Jr to an eight-year, $100 million contract in 2019. Like Atlanta, if the Red Sox believe Anthony is a sure bet to reach his ceiling, they could save hundreds of millions by locking him into a long-term extension now.
However, Anthony has not had any contract talks with the organization, according to the Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo.
“No, not at all. I haven’t heard a peep from anyone about anything,” Anthony said, per Cerullo. “I think right now the goal is pretty clear for me, it’s to worry about showing up every day and doing what I have to do here to help this team win. There haven’t been any talks of that and I think credit to the Red Sox for letting me go out and play, but no, there hasn’t been anything.”
Despite struggling shortly after his promotion, Anthony is showing signs of his top prospect label, slashing .300/.432/.433 in his last nine games. Although Boston has not started contract discussions, Anthony has already expressed interest in remaining with the organization long-term.
“I think it’s a matter of how it looks and how it works on both ends, but obviously for me and my family and my agency, knowing this is a place I came up through and yeah, I would love to play here for sure,” Anthony said, according to Cerullo. “But at the same time, understanding and trusting who I am as a baseball player and how much I believe in myself.”
“But yeah, obviously I’d be open to that but as far as numbers or anything like that, I don’t know, I don’t know where we’re at,” he continued. “Like I said, I’m focused on finishing this year out and continuing to learn and get better every day, and we’ll go from there.”
As the trade deadline approaches, the Red Sox should put their focus on getting Anthony more playing time. While an extension may be in the pipeline, finding room for their top prospect to grow supersedes all other initiatives.
