How Commanders' receivers ranked in 2024 in incompletions due to WR error

You were watching a Commanders game in 2024, and Jayden Daniels’ pass was incomplete. Whose fault was it?

Was it because Daniels threw an inaccurate pass? Or did the receiver run his route incorrectly, and as a result, was not where he was to be when the ball arrived? Or did the receiver simply drop the pass?

Well, Warren Sharp of SharpFootballAnalysis.com provided his data from the 2024 regular season, which calculated the incompletions last season due to receiver error.

How did the Commanders rank among the 32 teams? Per Sharp, only five teams’ receivers committed more errors resulting in incompletions. Eighteen percent of the incompletions for the Commanders were due to receiver errors. Three other teams (Giants, Saints, 49ers) also had their receivers come in at 18% error.

Who were the teams whose receivers committed more errors leading to incompletions? Bengals receivers were at 19%, while the Chargers and Falcons were at 20% receiver error. Aaron Rodgers will be glad to learn the Jets receivers had the second-highest rate at 22%. Thus, Packers receivers committed the league’s highest percentage of errors resulting in incompletions in 2024, at 23%.

What does Sharp use to compute the receiver’s errors? Sharp responded, “Most of it is drops, but also accounts for when a receiver lost control at the ground, receiver slipped or fell down, causing the incompletion, he didn’t get both feet inbounds but should have, and a couple of other small instances.”

On the flip side of the coin, one could look at the catch percentage for the Commanders in 2024. This is calculated by taking the number of receptions divided by the number of targets. But of course, it still falls short of providing you whether the error was the quarterback’s, receiver’s or both.

Also, keep in mind that the more a receiver is targeted, the more opportunities there are for not only catching a pass but also for things to go wrong, lowering your catch percentage. Terry McLaurin led the Commanders with 117 receiving targets and 82 receptions. His catch percentage was 70.1 percent. Commanders with a higher catch percentage with a minimum of 17 receptions were: Austin Ekeler (85.4), Brian Robinson (80.0), Dyami Brown (75), Luke McCaffrey (75), Zach Ertz (72.5), and Olamide Zaccheaus (70.3).
