Caitlin Clark Gets One Word From Sophie Cunningham After Fever News originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Indiana Fever are 8-8 heading into the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup Championship game on Tuesday. Indiana will face the Minnesota Lynx, who are looking to win the title for the second straight season.
Interestingly, the two teams haven’t played each other yet this season and won’t officially meet until August 22 in Indianapolis. That matchup will be the first of back-to-back games between the teams later in the year.
For now, the Fever are monitoring star guard Caitlin Clark, who has missed the last two games with a groin injury. Indiana dropped a home game to the Sparks before bouncing back with a road win in Dallas without Clark on the floor.
On Sunday, Clark received some uplifting news. She was named one of the two captains for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game after earning the most fan votes. She’ll join Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier as co-captain.
Following the announcement, teammate Sophie Cunningham celebrated the moment on Instagram with a one-word post:
“Gang”
Cunningham has been a valuable addition to Indiana’s roster, even if she hasn’t contributed much offensively. A second-round pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft out of Missouri, she’s averaging 5.6 points per game this season. More importantly, she’s become a vocal leader and often acts as a protector for Clark on the court.
Cunningham has also dealt with her share of injuries. She missed five games earlier in the season with an ankle issue. In the win over Dallas, she played 24 minutes and scored five points.
The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will be held on July 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The rest of the starters will be announced on Tuesday, with the league’s head coaches selecting the reserves shortly after.
Clark and Collier will then draft their teams from the pool of starters and reserves on July 8. This marks the first time either has served as an all-star captain.
