Dream’s Brittney Griner Makes Unexpected Personal Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream have opened the 2025 WNBA season atop the Eastern Conference standings, sitting in second place with a 10-5 record.
While the Dream have found success this season, Griner has taken a step back in her first year with the team, allowing star teammates like Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard to lead the way. The 6-foot-9 center is averaging 9.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game through 13 games – career lows in her 11-year WNBA tenure.
Even so, Griner appears content in her new role and continues to engage with fans, including Australian gold medalist skateboarder Arisa Trew.
On Friday, the X Games’ official Instagram account posted a video of Griner swapping jerseys with the skateboarder, a move that’s more commonly seen between basketball players.
Griner even signed the jersey with a personal message for Trew.
“Wow, this is so cool,” Trew said as she received the signed Griner jersey. “Thank you so much, Brittney. This is so cool.”
Trew, from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, is only 15 years old and has already earned nine gold medals in international competition, including the 2024 Paris Olympics (1 gold medal), the World Championships in Rome (1) and three different X Games events (7). That total includes her most recent win at last weekend’s X Games in Osaka.
She also became the youngest-ever from her country to win an Olympic gold medal.
“Who said jersey swaps need to be in the same sport?” the X Games captioned its post. “Brittney Griner is a huge fan of @arisa_trew and sent her a signed jersey. So naturally, we made Arisa a #XGames jersey to send back 🏀🛹”
Griner and the Dream look to avoid a two-game losing streak as they begin a four-game homestand with a matchup against Napheesa Collier and the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx.
