Tyrone Tracy Explains Giants QB Leadership Dynamic originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Giants’ quarterback depth chart looks completely different than it did heading into last season. They decided before the end of the 2024 campaign they would move on from Daniel Jones, installing three new pieces to compete for the starting job.
New York began with the signings of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston during free agency before the team drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round of the NFL Draft in April.
The rookie has come in and impressed in the time since though it may be a while before he earns the No. 1 spot for good. That leaves Russell and Winston as the veteran pieces that will act as a bridge to the next generation until the time comes.
But despite having two demonstrative veteran leaders in the locker room, Giants running back Tyrone Tracy believes their dynamic is a good thing for the team. As Tracy put it during an appearance on Good Morning Football, the two have worked together to act as vocal leaders without stepping on the other’s toes.
“I wouldn’t say leader of the pack because Jameis and Russ, they both have a really good dynamic to where they both respect each other,” Tracy said. “They both allow each other to lead in their own way, whatever it may be.”
While the Giants have two steam engines of leadership in their quarterbacks Tracy also recognized the need for others across the offense and defense to be in lockstep with Russell and Winston.
“I think that’s really good because you need more than one leader. You need more than one person speaking up. It can’t just be Russ or Jameis. It has to be a running back, a linebacker, a D-end, you know what I’m saying? It has to be multiple people on the team leading so that everyone knows, the young guys know this is the way we’re going.”
Leadership felt lacking last season when the Giants spiraled to a 3-14 including losses in 11 of their last 12 games. There’s no win total turnaround guaranteed next season, but it seems that specific issue will not be a problem with this year’s group, regardless of which quarterback gets the nod.
In fact, the infectious leadership of these two veterans could help some of the other key players for the Giants find their voices as the team charters a new path forward in 2025.
