Michigan basketball's Vlad Goldin undrafted, signs with Miami Heat as free agent

Now second-year Michigan basketball coach Dusty May brought just one player with him when he left Florida Atlantic to take over the job in Ann Arbor prior to the 2024-25 season — and that man will now work toward his NBA dream.

Vladislav Goldin, a 7-foot-1, 250-pound center who starred in his lone campaign for the Wolverines, went undrafted in this week’s NBA Draft, but has signed a two-way contract as a free agent with the Miami Heat, according to ESPN.

Goldin led the Wolverines with a team-best 16 points per game and finished second on the roster with seven rebounds a game.

Michigan center Vladislav Goldin (50) blocks a layup from Auburn guard Miles Kelly (13) during the first half of the Sweet 16 round of NCAA tournament at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Not only was Goldin among the nation’s top 10 in field goal percentage (60.7%), but after never having attempted a 3-pointer in four seasons in college, he expanded his game and proved relatively consistent, knocking down 33.3% of his shots (11-for-33) from behind the arc as he was named first-team All-Big Ten.

Goldin’s transition to the Big Ten proved a bit slow at first, as he scored in single digits in five of his first six games. But after that, he put up double figures in 26 of his next 28 games, including six double-doubles, while averaging 18.4 points per game in his final 31 contests. That was highlighted by a 36-point outburst at UCLA, 31 against Northwestern, 20 points and 15 boards against Maryland and 29 points at Michigan State.

Goldin’s journey was a memorable one off the court as well.

It started when he proposed to future fiancée Camryn Vogler following a home loss to MSU in late February, but perhaps equally as moving was his separation from his immediate family for five years during a basketball odyssey that saw him go from Russia to Texas to Florida to Ann Arbor. Later in the season, he was able to reunite with his parents in America.

“I can’t think of any player that I’ve enjoyed just watching who they became as much of a person as Vlad,” May recently told WXYZ-TV (Ch. 7 in Detroit). “To see him as a fairly unconfident young guy just trying to figure it out, to someone who is beloved by everyone around him, he’s such a great ambassador of both FAU and Michigan.”
