“Bonus Cantos!” – Michael Kay.

Actually, we’ve reached a point where it’s no longer a bonus for fans or the Yankees when the team goes to extra innings, especially on the road. After all, since 2020, the Bronx Bombers are an unsightly 12-27 away from Yankee Stadium in extra-inning affairs. (Stats courtesy of Katie Sharp). Included in that record is an overall (home and road) extra innings tally of 1-6 so far this season.

That’s simply unbecoming of a team that fancies itself as a perennial World Series contender. Championship-caliber clubs know how to win in clutch moments. They understand how to come back when they’re down and know how to get the job done in any situation.

Unfortunately, the 2025 Yankees don’t know how to do those things. They might learn as the season goes on, but so far, the evidence is overwhelmingly against them.

The only team in MLB who has a worse extra innings record than the Yanks this season is the lowly Colorado Rockies, who are 0-5. That’s not a team who the Yankees should be okay being compared to or mentioned alongside.

Part of the reason for their extra-inning struggles is the Yankees’ inability to hit with runners in scoring position. They currently own the worst mark in The League for runners left in scoring position per game (4.06). And seeing as how the “ghost runner” means you automatically start extra innings with a runner in scoring position, you can see how the Yankees’ struggles in both areas are related.

Some will blame New York’s bullpen for the team’s struggles in extra innings, but that is only partially true. Yes, the pitching needs to be better. However, the hitters need to be better, too. There’s no excuse for having a collective .063 batting average after the ninth inning.

It would behoove the Bombers to figure things out and quickly, because as things currently stand, that “Bonus Cantos” is “No Bueno.”
