Evander Kane broke his own Oilers trade news with heartfelt post

Evander Kane’s time with the Edmonton Oilers is at an end and the news came about in a pretty unique way.

On Wednesday morning, Kane himself broke the news of his own trade mere moments after NHL insiders hinted at the potential for a deal to send the Oilers forward to the Vancouver Canucks. In a post to Twitter, Kane thanked the Oilers organization and Edmonton fans for the last three years — two of which where Edmonton went to the Stanley Cup Final.

After the heartfelt messages, Kane then announced that he’s joining the Canucks for the final year of his four-year, $20.5 million contract in a trade. It was later revealed that the Canucks would be sending a 2025 fourth-round pick back to the Oilers in return for Kane.

It’s definitely not often that athletes break their own trade news in a goodbye message to their former team. Especially not in the NHL, where not many players have a major social media presence like other sports leagues like the NBA or NFL.

In 77 games played during the 2023-24 season with the Oilers, Kane posted 24 goals and 44 points. Kane was out for the entirety of the 2024-25 regular season due to injuries, but ended up coming back for the Oilers’ Stanley Cup playoff run.

Kane also has a lengthy history of well-known personal issues that have cropped up throughout his career, from filing for bankruptcy to domestic assault allegations. The NHL investigated the claims in 2021 but found they “could not be substantiated.”
