Coastal Carolina went into Sunday’s Game 2 of the Men’s College World Series against LSU facing elimination. The stakes could not be higher for the Chanticleers, and you would think that an umpiring crew would be aware of that.
Instead, Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected just 10 pitches into the bottom of the first inning.
After an 0-1 pitch in the first, home plate umpire Angel Campos exchanged some words with Schnall. It was unclear what possessed Campos into engaging with Schnall in an elimination game, but we could see as the Coastal Carolina coach signaled that Campos missed three pitches.
That was enough for Campos to eject Schnall, and the entire situation escalated from there.

At one point, first base umpire Casey Moser tried to separate Schnall, and he took a tumble.

Again, it was a championship series, and emotions are running high. Campos handled the dugout banter in a way that invited an altercation and an ejection. There are ways for an umpire to handle the situation that doesn’t lead to a team losing its coach in an elimination game.
That was the Ump Show at its worst.
