Quinn Ewers Expected to Face Challenge in Making Dolphins' Final Roster

Quinn Ewers Expected to Face Challenge in Making Dolphins’ Final Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was once seen as a top prospect in his draft class, but injuries and inconsistent play in his final year of college football led his draft stock to slip.

Now, after landing with the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round, Ewers could face a growing challenge to even make the final roster.

Ewers was already low on the depth chart when he was selected, joining the team weeks after they had signed former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson to a one-year deal. Though Wilson lost his starting job with the New York Jets and sat behind rookie Bo Nix on the Denver Broncos last season, he has already earned some praise from Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

“He looks like a guy who has been through some [expletive] and found his way through it,” McDaniel said, via reporter Joe Schad in a post on X.

One former NFL quarterback turned analyst believes that Ewers could face even more competition soon. Kurt Benkert predicted the team could trade for Cleveland Browns rookie Dillon Gabriel, who is in a crowded quarterback room that includes veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett along with fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders.

“I wouldn’t be shocked to see the #Dolphins trade for #Browns QB Dillon Gabriel at the end of the preseason,” Benkert wrote.

“They liked him a ton and saw him as an incredible scheme fit with athletic upside and were going to take him a few picks later, but then the Browns drafted him (per source).”

Ewers’ chances of making the final roster could depend on whether the Dolphins decide to keep two or three quarterbacks, making the practice squad a more likely destination for his rookie season.
