NFL insider: Panthers have interest in free-agent S Justin Simmons

The Carolina Panthers still might be on the prowl for a veteran safety.

This past Thursday, ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler joined Kincade & Salciunas on Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fanatic. Fowler was asked about the possibility of the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles adding free-agent safety Justin Simmons, and offered up another potential suitor for the two-time Pro Bowler.

“Simmons is interesting, because I think coming out of Atlanta, I do think he’s looking for that big scheme,” he stated. “That’s why the Eagles are on the shortlist there. It’s Philadelphia, it’s Carolina—has interest in Simmons. Ejiro Evero came from the Vic Fangio school. So that’s where I think you should look for Simmons.”

Before becoming Carolina’s defensive coordinator two years ago, Evero served in the same role for the Denver Broncos in 2022. That’d be Simmons’ penultimate season in Denver, where he recorded an NFL-leading six interceptions and a career-high three forced fumbles.

Simmons, who turns 32 years old in November, spent the 2024 campaign with the Atlanta Falcons. He amassed 62 combined tackles and two picks over 16 starts.

Despite signing Tre’von Moehrig to a three-year, $51 million deal this spring, the Panthers could use some additional safety help. Outside of Moehrig, Carolina is carrying six other players at the position—veterans Demani Richardson and Nick Scott, 2025 fourth-round pick Lathan Ransom and undrafted rookies Isaac Gifford, Jack Henderson and Trevian Thomas.

Carolina has previously expressed interest in free-agent safeties Julian Blackmon and Marcus Williams, both of whom were brought in for visits in late March.
