Report: Saints to meet with former Jaguars, Bills WR Gabe Davis

June is the time when the NFL’s remaining free agents start to scour the market for work — voluntary workouts are over and training camp is on the horizon, and nobody wants to go into the preseason without a home. The New Orleans Saints have been linked to several names in free agency, and this week they’ll be meeting with wide receiver Gabe Davis, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Miscast as a leading receiver on the Jacksonville Jaguars, Davis was limited to just 20 catches on 42 targets across 10 games last year. Then he suffered a knee injury that ended his season, and the Jaguars let him go in the spring while taking on more than $20 million in dead money over the next two years. As Rapoport observed, that much money coming from Jacksonville means Davis is a candidate to take a one-year deal with his new team. He’s previously visited the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He would add some size to the Saints’ receiving corps at a listed 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds; earlier in his career, when Davis was playing second fiddle to Stefon Diggs, he scored 27 touchdown catches across four years and averaged 42.7 yards per game with the Buffalo Bills. With Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed demanding attention from defenses in New Orleans, Davis could flourish. Assuming he’s healthy. A few days ago Rapoport said that Davis was “not quite ready” while recovering from his meniscus injury, so maybe the Saints are just giving him their due diligence on this visit. Stay tuned.
