Marchand scores double-OT winner as Panthers tie Stanley Cup Final

The Panthers were 18 seconds away from closing out Game 2 in overtime. But Oilers forward Corey Perry had other plans, scoring a game-tying goal with 17.8 seconds left in regulation.

Hours before Marchand’s game-winner, the Panthers scored the opening goal on an early power play after Evander Kane caught Carter Verhaeghe in the face with a high stick. Sam Bennett, who scored twice in Florida’s Game 1 loss, capitalized on the man advantage with the game’s first goal. Nate Schmidt got the assist on the goal after notching two assists in Game 1.

Bennett has 13 playoff goals, 12 of which have been on the road, which is a new NHL record.

But Bennett’s goal would not keep the Panthers ahead for long. Kane made up for his earlier penalty with a goal 7:39 into the first period, knotting the score at one.

Defenseman Evan Bouchard, who is one of the league’s top offensive defensemen, got his own rebounded puck after Aleksander Barkov blocked his shot. Bouchard’s second shot attempt got through Florida’s defense and past Sergei Bobrovsky, giving the Oilers the lead.

The Panthers were not about to go down without a fight. The eventful first period continued with a pass across the offensive zone from Eetu Luostarinen to Seth Jones, and Jones scored on a wide-open net to tie the game at two. It was his first career Stanley Cup Final goal.

Leon Draisaitl, the hero of Game 1, put Edmonton back ahead on a power play. Bennett was in the penalty box for goaltender interference after he fell on Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner.

But thanks to key defensive plays by Panthers like Gustav Forsling and Eetu Luostarinen, Florida kept Edmonton from evening the game until the final moment. It looked like Marchand’s first goal would be the game-winner until Perry’s last-minute, game-tying goal.

Marchand, who Florida acquired in a trade with Boston in March, was inches away from scoring the overtime winner, but Skinner made an excellent save to deny the veteran, and his second chance hit off the post. Sam Reinhart had a chance to end the game with a breakaway, but his shot missed the net.

Lundell set up Marchand for his second breakaway of the game, and Marchand did not miss that time.
