Wings Could Add Help for Paige Bueckers Amid Roster Woes originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Dallas Wings, coming off a 9-31 season which paved the way to them landing the No. 1 overall pick and budding star Paige Bueckers, have had a slow start in their attempt to rebuild. Heading into Friday’s game against the Sparks, the Wings were just 1-7, the worst record in the WNBA, and there has not been much hope for a quick turnaround.
Bueckers has been out with a concussion and though she is eligible to come back from the injury, she will not play on Friday. She did return to practice, though, so she could be back soon. Bueckers has averaged 14.7 points, and ranked fourth in the league with 6.7 assists per game. She also grabbed 4.5 rebounds and chipped in with 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks.
The Wings have been hit doubly hard because not only has Bueckers been out, but backup point guard Ty Harris has also been out. Both are expected to be back soon, but the Wings’ roster will undergo more churn in the coming weeks.
Teaira McCowan (Turkey) and Luisa Geiselsöder (Germany) will be heading to Europe to represent national teams in the EuroBasket tournament that tips off late this month. McCowan is slated to leave after Friday night’s game, while Geiselsöder will leave a week later.
Coach Chris Koclanes said that with the roster again being depleted even as Bueckers is slated to return, the team may use a hardship exception to bring on another player to the roster.
He pointed out that the Wings have already been piecing together sometimes awkward lineups this year.
“You’ve seen us just kind of tinker with all sorts of different lineups With Maddy (Siegrist) playing the 4, been playing a lot of 3 here in the last couple games with Paige (Bueckers) and Ty (Harris) out …” Koclanes said.
“Just exploring all different combinations, playing a little smaller And then we will see if we qualify for a hardship. We might go under nine at some point if those two are leaving so might be adding someone to the roster here, but we’ll see.”
