The RBC Canadian concluded its animated second round on Friday, producing an unexpected leader in Cameron Champ, an eighth alternate who joined after Shahith Theegala withdrew, and ending the weekend hopes of many top golfers.

One such notable name is Justin Rose, who has $69 million in career earnings. He missed the cut after an incident on the par-3 seventh hole. His tee shot landed in the rough, and when he tried to clear a loose impediment, the ball moved.

He self-reported the infraction and took a two-shot penalty. Had he replaced the ball to its original position, the penalty would have been only one shot.

“Thank you as always Canada, just gutted I won’t be around for the weekend @RBCCanadianOpen😔.” Rose posted on social media. “I really do love spending time in this beautiful country🍁… Next stop @usopengolf and another USGA examination test!! 🧐”

Another big name who missed the cut is Rory McIlroy. He recorded one of his worst 36-hole performances in recent years.

“It concerns me. You don’t want to shoot high scores like the one I did today.” McIlroy said after missing cut. “I came here with a new driver, thinking it would solve some of the problems off the tee—but it didn’t.”

McIlroy shot a quadruple bogey on his par-4 fifth, which took his score to a massive number.

“I didn’t hit enough fairways. I felt like I drove the ball a bit better yesterday than I did today. I think once I made that big number on the front nine, I was always behind the ball a little bit.” He added.

“After nine holes, I’d sort of resigned myself to the fact that I’d be flying home to Florida tonight.”

Both of the golfers will tee off again on Thursday at Oakmont.
