Chicago Bears training camp is in full swing ahead of the 2025 regular season. Under new head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears are preparing a return to relevancy with important practices and meetings at Halas Hall.
The starters, such as quarterback Caleb Williams, wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, and defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Montez Sweat, will hone their skills as they adjust to a new system. Rookies such as tight end Colston Loveland, receiver Luther Burden III, tackle Ozzy Trapilo, and defensive tackle Shemar Turner will look to hit the ground running ahead of their first season. And depth players like offensive lineman Doug Kramer, defensive end Dominique Robinson, and safety Jonathan Owens will try and hang on to a roster spot with competition nipping at their heels.
For all intents and purposes, the first week of training camp is in the book and while it’s still early, a few players have been consistent performers during practices. Here are our top standouts as we gear up to head into Week 2:
1. HC Ben Johnson
The first week of training camp is more about the coaching staff than the players. Installs are still happening, practices aren’t as intense yet, and pads haven’t come on yet. While you can see certain players begin to stand out during practice, no one has turned heads quite like Johnson. The new head coach has brought a new way of doing things at Halas Hall with the hope of turning the franchise around after a miserable few seasons. Johnson won’t stand for mediocrity, as evidenced by his move to pull the entire starting offense off the field during drills on the very first day due to their inability to get set in a timely manner. He’s vocal as well, shouting loudly across the field if something doesn’t look right. He and the offensive staff are figuratively making the players drink out of a fire hose early on in hopes of preparing them for everything that may come their way.

2. DC Dennis Allen
Johnson isn’t the only coach who is making an impact early on. New defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is giving the offense fits with his unique coverages and blitzes. The offense has struggled over the first few days of camp, thanks in part to Allen’s defense. “There is not one thing that looks the same on that defense,” wide receiver DJ Moore said after Friday’s practice. “So, everything is different in every place. It is good for us, but I’m glad we don’t have to go against it on Sundays.” Many different players have had big moments early in camp on the defense. It’s Allen who has been coaching them up, and so far, he seems to be a breath of fresh air for the veteran group.
3. WR JP Richardson
This year’s training camp darling may have already been revealed despite having just one practice in front of fans. Undrafted wide receiver JP Richardson is turning heads while playing with the reserves and is gaining fans every day. The former TCU playmaker has established a strong rapport with quarterback Tyson Bagent, making an impressive one-handed grab on the first day, and came through with a pair of clutch catches later on. Richardson still has a long way to go before he can be considered a legitimate threat to win a job, but he’s doing everything that’s asked of him up to this point.
4. WR Rome Odunze
It took the starting offense a few practices before they started to click, but wide receiver Rome Odunze has been on point from the start of camp. No matter what the route is, Odunze and Williams have been connecting early and often when practicing. Odunze has come down with 50/50 balls in the end zone, caught strikes down the sidelines, and grabbed deep passes down the middle before turning up field. It seems whatever Odunze has been asked to do up to this point, the second-year receiver has followed through well. If Williams and Odunze continue to build their chemistry, there could be a new WR1 in town for the 2025 season.

5. DE Montez Sweat
By now, we know that much of the added pressure coming off the defensive line early in practice was by design in order to make Williams more comfortable when facing adversity. That still doesn’t mean Montez Sweat isn’t scary when he’s whipping off the edge and chasing the quarterback down. During Thursday’s practice, Sweat pressured Williams on a few occasions to keep him on his toes while also trying to deliver a strike downfield. Sweat’s pursuit came back right away when he blew past the offensive line for another pressure, which put Williams in a tough spot. We’ll know more about how Sweat and the rest of the lines are playing soon enough, but the former Pro Bowl edge rusher seems to be in midseason with how he’s coming after Williams—designed or not.
