After making their roster cuts down to 53 players on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers were left with just two healthy wide receivers (Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore) and three injured wideouts (Jauan Jennings, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing) to catch passes from Brock Purdy.
On Wednesday, the 49ers made another roster move that should help the quarterback after his offseason extension, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Marquez Valdes-Scantling, is signing with San Francisco.
Valdes-Scantling, 30, played collegiately at NC State from 2013-14 and South Florida from 2015-17 before the Green Bay Packers took him in the fifth round (No. 174 overall) in 2018 NFL draft. In his seven seasons split between the Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints, he’s caught 205 passes for 3,566 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also won two Super Bowls with Kansas City.
Valdes-Scantling originally signed with the Seattle Seahawks back in March but was released on Tuesday during their roster cuts. With the 49ers plays Seattle next Sunday in their Week 1 battle at Lumen Field, he could help their offense and also give some insights into the Seahawks’ offense and game plan as well.
San Francisco did have 53 players on their roster, so they’ll have to make a corresponding move before they officially sign Valdes-Scantling. It will be interesting to see if that’s a release or someone placed on injured reserve.
