49ers' Jennings Seeking New Contract or Trade, Per Report

49ers’ Jennings Seeking New Contract or Trade, Per Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The San Francisco 49ers ended a drawn-out contract extension situation with Brandon Aiyuk last offseason.

But now it appears the Niners could be in for another contract dilemma with a receiver.

After avoiding trade rumors and signing a four-year, $120 million deal, Aiyuk unfortunately went down with a torn ACL in Week 7. That injury opened the gates for other contributors in the receiving corps, and no other player rose to the occasion like Jauan Jennings.

In his fourth season, Jennings saw massive career highs in receptions (77), yards, (975) and touchdowns (6). With an ailing run game, Jennings became quarterback Brock Purdy’s top receiver target next to start tight end George Kittle.

Jennings, who also signed an extension last year, is now seeking a new contract or trade from San Francisco, according to reporter Adam Schefter.

Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million contract. He is set to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of the deal.

After his breakout season in 2024, it’s understandable that the former seventh round pick in 2020 feels he deserves a pay raise.

With Aiyuk likely out until Week 5 or 6 at the earliest, Jennings is expected to be a key part of the offense again this season. Christian McCaffrey will return in the backfield, but Kittle is up into his 30s, meaning Jennings could turn into the most reliable figure for the immediate and long-term receiving unit.

The report comes at an inopportune time for the Niners’ front office, as veterans are expected to report to training camp next Tuesday.

If the four-year 49er fails to report, San Francisco could be facing another messy receiver-led contract dispute.

The 49ers still have the league’s second-most cap space this offseason at over $45.6 million. A good chunk of that could be designated to Jennings, or the team could avoid another headache and survey trade offers that are sure to come leading up to camp next week.
