Brock Purdy is one of those quarterbacks who inspires doubts.

It starts from his NFL Draft selection with the very last pick in 2022, making him Mr. Irrelevant. The San Francisco 49ers didn’t take long to give him a chance to start, though.

And how’s this for a set of stats via ESPN:

“Since Brock Purdy took over as the full-time starter in Week 14 of the 2022 season, he ranks in the top five in passing yards and QBR, and he leads all quarterbacks in yards per attempt.”

Leading all quarterbacks in yards per attempt in that span is incredible.

There are those who want to call him a system QB, who want to say it’s all because of the weapons around him.

But you can’t totally fluke your way to the No. 1 spot on the yards per attempt list. It doesn’t work like that.

The 49ers sure hope it’s a lot of Purdy’s doing, because they gave him a five-year, $265 million contract extension this offseason.

It’s an incredible payday for a guy who was Mr. Irrelevant. There hasn’t been another last pick of the draft who has ever come close to making the impact that Purdy has, especially when you consider how quickly he has broken through to be a face of the franchise at quarterback.

The start of the 2025 regular season could be tricky. The 49ers’ wide receiver corps is very dinged up, so Purdy will have to rely heavily on RB Christian McCaffrey and TE George Kittle. Those aren’t bad guys to count on, though.

And if the rest of the roster gets healthy, Purdy can certainly lead San Francisco to a strong bounceback campaign.
