The San Francisco 49ers aren’t done tweaking their receiving corps just yet.
General manager John Lynch on Wednesday in a press conference told reporters veteran wide receiver Russell Gage Jr. would be back with the club on the 53-man roster. Adding Gage will mean making another move to clear a roster spot. With a glut of players on the offensive and defensive lines it wouldn’t be a surprise if the club opened a spot by moving one of the 20 players in the trenches.
Gage had an impressive training camp and preseason after missing all of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. We expected him to make the initial 53-man roster, but he was a surprise cut as part of the team’s Tuesday roster cutdown.
Re-signing Gage makes a ton of sense for the 49ers. They badly need help in the receiving corps. Gage joins a group that features Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, Skyy Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Jordan Watkins. With Jennings’ availability still unclear for the season opener and Demarcus Robinson serving a three-game suspension, Gage could play a key role early in the season.
