4 things to know about new Jaguars' WR Tim Patrick, who Jacksonville traded for

Following roster cutdowns on Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars made an addition at wide receiver, trading for Tim Patrick from the Detroit Lions.

While we didn’t know who the Jaguars would be targeting, there were signs that they were looking to add at the receiver position.

With the addition of Patrick, the Jaguars will now have to make a corresponding cut in order to make room for him on the 53-man roster.

Let’s take a closer look at the Jaguars’ newest wideout with four things to know.

Tim Patrick’s past production

Undrafted in 2017, Patrick originally began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens before catching on with the Denver Broncos in 2018. In his first two seasons, Patrick totaled 39 receptions for 533 yards with one touchdown.

However, in 2020, Patrick’s production really took off. That season, he totaled 742 receiving yards at 14.5 yards per catch. He followed that up in 2023 with 734 receiving yards and totaled 11 touchdowns during that two-year span.

Injuries forced Patrick to miss time

Coming off those two productive seasons, Patrick unfortunately would miss both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

An ACL injury in the summer of 2022 left Patrick sidelined for that entire season. Then the following summer, an Achilles injury forced him to miss all of 2023.

Patrick returned last season with the Detroit Lions. He appeared in 16 games, which included nine starts, and caught 33 passes for 394 yards with three touchdowns.

Tim Patrick’s fit with the Jaguars

The top of the Jaguars’ receiver depth chart is going to remain the same with Brian Thomas, Dyami Brown, Travis Hunter, and Parker Washington leading the way.

However, Patrick bolsters the depth of this unit and provides an experienced presence on the back end.

He also very much fits the mold when it comes to what the Jaguars look for at the receiver position. Patrick has a big frame, listed at 6-5 – 210 pounds, and is willing to do the dirty work that comes with playing the receiver position, including as a blocker, where he graded out well last season, according to PFF’s metrics.

Added insight from Lions Wire

For more on Patrick, Jeff Risdon, the managing editor of Lions Wire, provided us with some added insight into Patrick’s game.

“Tim Patrick was a nice find and veteran fit for a Lions team that sorely lacked size and depth at wide receiver in 2024,” wrote Risdon. “He stayed healthy and worked himself into being the No. 3 wide receiver behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Patrick caught 33 passes in total, including 16 in a critical 4-week period that included a two-TD outburst against the Packers.”

Risdon continued, “He came back to Detroit as a projected starter in 3WR sets, but third-round rookie Isaac TeSlaa proved much more dynamic almost right away. A nagging quad injury limited Patrick in practices and clearly sapped his speed. He still was effective in camp as a short-range and red zone target, but deeper routes and running after the catch are just not where Patrick wins anymore.

“Great teammate, strong big-bodied presence. He was likely to be a weekly inactive in Detroit with TeSlaa’s emergence and the superior speed offered by rookie Dominic Lovett and vet Kalif Raymond as the depth receivers, plus Detroit has two very good receiving TEs behind Sam LaPorta in Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra who can fill that widebody receiver role.”
