2025 NFL draft preview: Where do Chicago Bears stand at cornerback?

The Chicago Bears are in the middle of an important offseason, where they’re looking to develop into a contender under new head coach Ben Johnson.

Following a busy free agency that included some big-name additions, including offensive linemen Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson and Drew Dalman, as well as defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo, the Bears are shifting their focus toward the 2025 NFL draft.

Chicago has seven draft picks, even after their two trades, including four in the Top 75 — 10th overall, a pair of high second rounders and a third-round selection.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position to break down where Chicago stands entering the 2025 NFL draft. Next up is cornerback where Jaylon Johnson was paid last year, and Kyler Gordon just got paid this past week, locking down the top two talents at the position.

Who’s on the roster?

  • Jaylon Johnson
  • Kyler Gordon
  • Tyrique Stevenson
  • Josh Blackwell
  • Nick McCloud
  • Elijah Hicks
  • Shaun Wade
  • Nahshon Wright
  • Terell Smith
  • Ameer Speed

The Bears secondary is highlighted by the trio of Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, and Tyrique Stevenson, but the key for the group will be the career leap for Stevenson, if it’s there. Last year, Stevenson was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons for his play on the field, but with a new coaching staff and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen leading the way, there is expected growth through the defensive side of the ball. Chicago’s cornerback position is deep and very talented, and although the other names may not jump off the page, the secondary will be led by highly-respected veteran coach Al Harris who will be in his first year in Chicago.

Who departed this offseason?

  • Jaylon Jones
  • Reddy Steward

There were no big losses in free agency this offseason, as Jaylon Jones and Reddy Steward were more depth pieces than anything. Jones signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency while Steward departed for divisional rival Minnesota Vikings, but Chicago was active in bringing several free agent cornerbacks of their own. No big losses this offseason, and more additions than losses is always a good thing.

Positional need: Low

Given all the additions they made to increase depth behind their top guys, the Bears do not have a big need for the cornerback position. The only way the position would become a need for Chicago is if the coaching staff is looking to move on from Stevenson or create bigger competition around him. The Bears signed Gordon to a three-year contract extension to keep him in Chicago through 2028. Johnson and Gordon are the center pieces and foundation for the team’s cornerback group, and they could carry the secondary throughout the season and the foreseeable future.

Top draft prospects

  • Travis Hunter
  • Jahdae Barron
  • Will Johnson
  • Trey Amos
  • Benjamin Morrison

The star of the group is Travis Hunter, if he decides to play cornerback at the next level, but there is still elite talent behind him, including Jahdae Barron and Will Johnson leading the way. Chicago will more than likely be out on all of the top names, as most are projected to go in the first round, and their need for the position is bare minimum. Given the draft resources they have and where their needs fall, it would be a surprise to see the Bears look at adding a cornerback in the draft.
