The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
This focuses on tight end Josiah Deguara.
Josiah Deguara background, 2024 season
Deguara enters his sixth NFL season and first with the Cardinals. He was drafted om the third round in 2020 by the Green Bay Packers out of Cincinnati. He spent four seasons with the Packers, having his most productive season in 2021 when he had 25 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns.
After four seasons with Green Bay, he played last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played 87 offensive snaps in 15 games, catching three passes for 14 yards.
His offensive playing time has declined every years since 2021, but he has turned into a core special teams player, logging at least 200 special teams snaps for three straight seasons.
Josiah Deguara 2025 contract details, cap hit
Deguara signed a one-year vet-minimum deal for 2025 for $1.17 million. It is a qualifying veteran contract, so the cap hit will count only $1.03 million. There were no guarantees, not even a signing bonus, in the contract.
Questions he faces, roster outlook
Deguara is an intriguing option for the tight end room because of his work on special teams. Will that be enough for him to make the roster?
He is at best a player on the roster bubble, but his situation is interesting. It would appear that the top three tight ends are set in Trey McBride, Elijah Higgins and Tip Reiman. Deguara could be TE4, but the Cardinals only keep three active on game days, so his value on special teams would be negated. The battle between him and Travis Vokolek will be interesting to watch.
