The wide receiver room on the San Francisco 49ers‘ initial 53-man roster is in bad shape, but help could be on the way in the form of a two-time Super Bowl champion.
According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC2 in Houston, 7-year veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is choosing between the 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.
San Francisco’s initial 53-man roster included five wide receivers, but only two are healthy. Jauan Jennings has a calf issue. Rookie Jordan Watkins is dealing with a high ankle sprain, and Jacob Cowing appears to be headed for an IR stint because of a hamstring injury. That leaves Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore as the only healthy WRs on the roster headed into Week 1.
Adding a veteran WR would make a ton of sense for the 49ers. They released Robbie Chosen and Russell Gage, but Valdes-Scantling would certainly be a longer-term second or third WR option than either Chosen or Gage who could be active on game days via the practice squad. Last season with the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints, Valdes-Scantling hauled in 19 receptions for 411 yards and four touchdowns.
Valdes-Scantling entered the NFL in 2018 as a fifth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers. He spent four seasons in Green Bay before joining the Kansas City Chiefs for their last two Super Bowl seasons in 2022 and 2023. In KC he had 63 receptions for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns across 33 games.
In 106 career games and 68 starts, Valdes-Scantling has 205 catches, 3,566 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. He’s also the active career leader in yards-per-reception at 17.4 per catch.
